Life Change Happens in Relationship

Word of Life Camp Counselors

At Word of Life, we train our camp counselors to be responsible for the emotional, spiritual, and physical safety of every student that attends camp. Our goal is to provide an environment where they can grow and learn, and parents can rest confidently in the knowledge that their child’s care is of the utmost importance.

The Gospel Moves at the Speed of Relationships

We believe life change happens in relationship with other believers. That’s why we keep a low counselor-to-camper ratio and make sure our counselors are equipped with everything they need to create a fun, safe, engaging environment where campers will form strong relationships and grow in their faith.

Discover Who They Are

About our Counselors

Our counselors are a big part of what makes Word of Life camps special! They help everyone have a blast, but more importantly, they answer questions, care for, mentor, and encourage campers in their faith.

All counselors are either current students or have completed a minimum of one year at Word of Life Bible Institute. Word of Life Bible Institute is an accredited, post-secondary program offering intensive Bible study and ministry training. Bible Institute students are trained specifically for camp ministry, equipped with in-depth biblical knowledge, and invest time daily in God’s Word.

Safety and Accountability

We recognize the incredible trust you place in us when you send your child to a Word of Life camp. That’s why we have a chain of command in place at our camps to ensure that everyone is safe, taken care of, and held accountable. All our counselors are required to learn, sign and abide by our Child Protection Policy.

Each counselor reports to a unit leader, who is typically in charge of seven or eight counselors. Unit leaders make sure the needs of the counselors are met so that counselors can give campers their all and make camp the best it can be.

Child Protection Training: All camp employees receive specific training on our own Child Protection Policy and review the best practices of working with children and teens as they relate to awareness, prevention, reporting, response, and more.

Never-Alone Direct Supervision: Our policy is that campers are never to be alone, and our counselors are trained to follow this policy stringently. Campers are directly supervised by at least one--but typically several--counselors at all times; campers do not go anywhere or do anything without supervision.

How We Prepare Our Counselors

Camp Training: Camp and staff counselors complete intensive, on-site, training courses where they learn about leadership, counseling, safety and first aid, child and teen issues, spiritual preparation, camp programming, team building, and other topics.

Biblical Training: As students and graduates of Word of Life Bible Institute, our counselors have studied at one of the strongest Bible training schools in the country. Their unique curriculum equips them with classroom knowledge, as well as practical ministry and life growth.
