Jodie Sewall has been a puppeteer since age twelve and has enjoyed working in various children’s ministries for over thirty years. She is a 1984 graduate of Word of Life Bible Institute, and she met her husband, Sam, while she was a student. Sam has been on staff with Word of Life since 1986, and Jodie has served in many different ministry roles throughout the years. They have three adult children and eight grandchildren who bring life and energy when they visit!

Jodie is excited to share the truth of God’s Word with the Ranch campers this summer, as she was seven years old when she came to understand the truth of God’s great love for her. In her own words, this is her testimony of meeting Jesus.

“I was a normal seven-year-old sinner. Life was all about me. If I didn’t get my way, I would get mad at my siblings or parents. If I was in trouble, I would lie to get out of trouble. If my sister had lip gloss I wanted, I would sneak it when they weren’t looking. I needed to be rescued from my selfish, rebellious ways, but I didn’t know I needed rescuing until I started attending church with my mom and siblings.

Each week in Sunday school and church, I heard people talking about a man named Jesus. I heard stories of how Jesus healed the sick, fed an entire crowd, and raised people from the dead. The preacher and my Sunday school teacher taught that Jesus was God’s Son and that He was also God; they taught that, because He was God, He never did anything wrong. I liked Jesus a lot.

One day, at a Good Friday service in church, I listened as the preacher talked about Jesus dying on a cross. He described the suffering Jesus experienced at the hands of the soldiers who plucked his beard out and beat Him. He described the crowd of religious people who mocked Jesus, and then he talked about the process of nailing Jesus to the cross. I had grown to love Jesus from all the stories in the Bible I’d learned. He was kind and loving. He helped people. I couldn’t understand the cruelty of people and why Jesus’s life had to end with His horrible death on a cross.

However, it was what the preacher said next that changed my life; he explained that God had sent Jesus, His only Son, to be born in a manger for the purpose of growing up perfect (without any sin) so He could pay the penalty for ALL of mankind’s sins. He explained the reason Jesus experienced death on a cross: to pay the penalty for all the things I had done wrong. He called them sins. So, for all the times I had yelled at my siblings, lied to my parents, stolen lip gloss from a friend, disobeyed my parents or teachers – Jesus hung on a cross to pay the penalty for all those sinful things. Not only all the wrong things I had already done, but He was paying the penalty for all the wrong things I would do in the future.

Because it was a Good Friday service, I don’t think the preacher even talked about Jesus raising from the dead – he probably saved that good news for his Sunday message – but the preacher did extend an invitation that day. He said that if anyone wanted to accept the offer of forgiveness from Jesus, we could pray that day. I was only seven, but I knew I was sorry for the wrong things I had done, and I wanted Jesus to forgive me. I got up from my seat and walked to the front of the church to pray with the preacher. I thanked Jesus for paying the penalty for my sins, and I asked Jesus to forgive me. He did, and He sent the Spirit of God to come and live inside of us.

I’ve discovered over the past 50 years that He is everything He claims to be, and I know and love Him much better today than I did as a seven-year-old. He is my dearest friend and comforter.”

John and Christy served as camp directors at The Ranch from 1994 to 2005. In January of 2006, they moved to South Africa where they continued to serve with Word of Life. God has used Africa to develop their love for people and culture in many ways. You will often hear them say that Africa did not need John and Christy Page, but the Pages needed Africa. They continue to live in South Africa and are heading up a strategy to expand the gospel reach of Word of Life across the continent. It is a special treat for them to return to the camp God used to prepare them for the foreign mission field. They are thrilled to be sharing with your children this summer.
