Adirondack Wilderness Adventure is a unique specialty camp based on Word of Life Island offering students the opportunity to experience personal growth and develop leadership principles through the great outdoors!
Adirondack Wilderness Adventure begins every other week at The Island.
AWA is a two week long program divided into two sections, the Island and Backcountry.
Our Mission is to use wilderness experiences to teach young men and women to know Jesus through His creation, Biblical community, and spiritual disciplines.
A Two Week Program
During the Island section, campers can expect to participate in the exciting morning Bible Hours as well as various other Island breakout sessions and meetings while filling the rest of their days both on and off Island with hands on wilderness lessons and experiences such as: Off Trail Map & Compass Orienteering, Wilderness Rock Climbing, Canoeing Skills & River Trip, White Water Rafting, and a Park Ranger meet and greet.
The Backcountry section will actually take campers on a five day backpacking trip in the High Peaks region of the Adirondack Park! Campers will learn invaluable leadership principles as well as the importance of teamwork as they trek into completely remote lakes, summit the tallest mountains in NY, prepare all their meals over a fire, and live together in lean-tos and tents.
Inherent with this type of activity, physical condition becomes a large factor. This trip will be physically strenuous, even for those teens active in sports. A good test measure is if the participant can run 1.5 miles in under 12 minutes. They must also be able to pass the Island swim test which involves the continuous swimming of about 100 yards then treading water for 5 minutes.
The safety of our campers is highly valued. Each module will have a lead and assistant guide with a maximum of 6 campers. Our staff are uniquely qualified and trained to lead wilderness trips in the Adirondack Mountains. Lead guides have Wilderness First Aid training while assistant guides have basic first aid and all guides are CPR certified. In addition, every group that leaves the Island will have with them a satellite GPS device allowing communication with the program director and allowing their location to be tracked remotely.
